How do I tell whether my stress is becoming depression?

I have had a lot of stress for months, but recently I have become less interested in things, I feel low energy most days, and I do not really want to talk to people. I still go to work, but it takes a lot more effort than before. I am not sure if this is just a hard period in life or if I should speak to a doctor. What signs should I watch for?

Stress and depression can overlap, but when low mood, reduced interest, low energy, and withdrawal last for weeks and start affecting daily life, it is time to seek professional assessment. A psychologist can help you distinguish between stress overload, burnout, and depression, and guide you to the right treatment plan. The earlier you speak up, the easier it is to treat and the less likely it is to become more severe.
